GREY HORN BUTTE
Greyhorn Butte "Devils Tower", in the Black Hills of Northeastern Wyoming, is a sacred site and a vital cultural resource for Indigenous Nations from over twenty Plains tribes. For centuries, Indigenous Nations have performed religious and cultural ceremonies there, including the Sun Dance, sweat lodge rites, vision quests, and prayer offerings. However, in recent years, growing numbers of visitors and rock climbers have disrupted these ceremonies.
"Climbers make lots of noise and come near our people when they are praying. By doing this, they disturb our efforts to obtain spiritual guidance. When climbers hammer objects into the butte, it is like they are pounding stakes into our bodies."

The Great Teachings of Mitapi Ha' by Scott Barta,
A very long time ago, a small Mitapi Ha (Frog) of the Mitapi Ha Oyate (Frog Nation) wanted to show appreciation for the sheer beauty of Life and give thanks to Grand Mother Earth and Grand Father Sky for everything the Mitapi Ha had, so it was agreed during a Great Circle Meeting of the Mitapi Ha Nation that they would all climb to the top of a most beautiful and sacred Inyan (Rock) formation which stood out alone on the prairie, on the northwest side of the Center of the Universe, the Ho Coka (“Hearney Peak”) of the sacred He Sapa (Black, Rocky Mountains; “Black Hills”). . "Under the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie written by the United States Federal Government and eight Indigenous Red “Indian” Nations, the Black Hills [including Greyhorn Butte] rightfully belongs to the Lakota Nation, but because of illegal decisions of the Supreme Court still pending, we cannot freely use the Black Hills for the four day World Peace and Prayer Day Event (WPPD)(June 21st, 2005). Our Sacred Site issue is an ongoing unresolved case, because of historical gold rush that violated that Treaty."

JOURNEY TO GREY HORN BUTTE
Lakota scholar Vine Deloria, Jr. explains, “It’s not that Indians should have exclusive rights at (Grey Horn Butte) "Devils Tower". It’s that that location is sacred enough so that it should have time of its own. And once it has had time of its own, then the people who know how to do ceremonies should come and minister to it. That’s so hard to get across to people.” -Vine Deloria LEARN MORE
